One of the most famous coincidences in American history occurred on July 4, 1826, when both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died just a few hours apart on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Both men had signed the Declaration, and they were two of the major figures throughout the Revolution and in the formative years of the new country, including serving as the second and third presidents.

For many years they were political rivals, but later in life they renewed their friendship and exchanged letters on a regular basis. By 1826, both men were in failing health, but they were both determined to make it to the 50th anniversary. Jefferson died at Monticello at about 12:50pm, and John Adams died at about 6:20pm here at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts, which is shown here in these two photos. Ironically, his last words were “Thomas Jefferson survives.”

His home here in Quincy, which he named Peacefield, was built in 1731, and he purchased it in 1787. He lived here before and after his presidency, and the house was still in the family when the top photo was taken around 1900. His great grandson Brooks Adams owned the house until his death in 1927, and it was subsequently sold to the Adams Memorial Society. It is now owned by the National Park Service, and it is part of the Adams National Historical Park.
