From the beginning of a service honoring the late Jesse Jackson Sr. Friday, speaker after speaker referenced how the civil rights leader — and particularly two of his most oft-repeated sayings — had inspired their own lives and careers, and they implored the thousands in attendance to continue his work.
“When Rev. Jackson said in Chicago, ‘I am somebody’ and keep hope alive,’ for us it’s different,” NBA superstar Isiah Thomas, who first met Jackson when he was a boy growing up on the city’s West Side, told the crowd gathered at the House of Hope, 752 E. 114th St. Thomas said Jackson’s words uplifted him throughout his Hall of Fame career.
Jackson died Feb. 17 at the age of 84. The mourners in attendance at the memorial Friday — dubbed the “People’s Celebration” — included former presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden as well as former Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and First Lady Jill Biden. Chicagoan Jennifer Hudson, an Oscar and Grammy winner, performed.
In his remarks, Obama said his career, too, was inspired by Jackson — especially the reverend’s performance as a candidate for the 1984 Democratic primary for president. Jackson, along with former Mayor Harold Washington, was a big reason Obama eventually settled in Chicago and then was able to become a legitimate presidential hopeful, he said.
“It was because of that path that [Jackson] had laid — because of his courage, his audacity — that two decades later a young Black senator from Chicago’s South Side would even be taken seriously as a candidate for the presidential nomination,” Obama said.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Jacqueline Jackson ❤️
Statement on behalf of Yusef D. Jackson
Over the past 48 hours, there has been a lot of commotion about who my father, Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. endorsed before his passing - just over a month ago. Among my Father's proudest achievements was expanding civic participation and electing leaders who protected our democracy and advanced justice.
Earlier this year, despite ongoing challenges with mobility and his declining health, Reverend Jackson began the process of reviewing candidates and identifying those he intended to support in the upcoming primary election. However, he did not live long enough to finish the process.
Out of respect for my father, we decided not to publicly release his intended selections given the process had not been finalized.
However, due to an internal miscommunication, a draft sample ballot was released by a staff person who did not have authorization.
This unintentional error has set off unforeseen controversy. One that has unfortunately revolved around one candidate in particular.
I want to be very clear. We did not withdraw or retract our endorsement of any one candidate. Instead, we made clear that the document shared this weekend was not final and out of respect for my late father and in our family's time of bereavement, we would not be confirming nor issuing political endorsements in this cycle.
I am disheartened that the topic of today's political chatter has been focused on this instead of the issues that matter to everyday voters. Issues like affordability, healthcare, quality education, justice, and equal rights. Those are the issues our family has spent decades fighting for and those are the issues voters should keep top of mind when they cast their ballots.
Please respect this as my final comments on this matter and please, in my father's memory, VOTE. Our ancestors put their lives on the line so that we could participate in our democracy - to elect leaders who share our values and who will faithfully serve the people.
Yusef D. Jackson

They sent the Rev. Jesse Jackson home Saturday the only way it could have been done: with Gospel music, testimony that often brought people to their feet and story after story about a man who rose from humble beginnings to become one of America’s most influential Civil Rights leaders.
The final service in Jackson’s honor, in a packed chapel at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, proved befitting of a human rights advocate who came to be known, simply, as the “country preacher.” Jackson earned that nickname in the years after leaving the Chicago Theological Seminary, while he marched from Selma to Montgomery and through streets in Chicago and far beyond.
Like any good country preacher, Jackson could move people to tears and move them to act. Speakers and performers at his funeral Saturday — a group that included his children, singer Stevie Wonder and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa — came to do both.

Crossing the bridge from memory to mandate.
This morning we gathered in Selma with leaders from across the country, including Yusef Jackson CEO of the Rainbow PUSH Coaliton and Governor J.B. Pritzker, to honor the courage of those who marched for voting rights and to recommit ourselves to the unfinished work of justice.
Selma reminds us that progress is never accidental—it is organized, courageous, and carried forward by each generation.
We stand on sacred ground, carrying the legacy forward.
Marching together in Selma this morning.
Yusef Jackson marched alongside members of our Rainbow Coalition from across the country, including participants from Minnesota, Washington D.C., and Illinois, as we honored the legacy of the movement that changed America.
Selma reminds us that the march is not history alone—it is a call for every generation to keep standing up for our rights!
At the House of Hope in Chicago delivering special remarks at the public celebration for my beloved mentor, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson.
I reminded the thousands who were present of the power of hope and faith as we remain anchored through storms with the promise of a rainbow. Rev. Jackson taught us that. We must and we will continue to lift up his legacy and push forward in his spirit.
Thank you, Rev. Jackson. Love and comfort to the Jackson family.
Honored to Celebrate the Life and Homecoming for Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson .Sr- “The Country Preacher.” God Bless His Soul! I am so Glad our Paths Crossed! #IAmSomebody #TheCountryPreacher

We are here to join you as you say farewell to a man who carried the message of hope from the streets of Chicago to the streets of Soweto in Johannesburg.”

Homecoming Celebration in honour of Rev Jesse Jackson
Tribute by President Cyril Ramaphosa:
“When Jesse Jackson reminded the United States that its strength lies not in exclusion, but in the beautiful diversity of its people – black and white, rich and poor, urban and rural, workers and farmers, immigrants and the forgotten – we were inspired by his message and embraced the universal values of diversity, inclusion and equity that he preached.”

~ My Tribute at the Homecoming Celebration of Reverend Jesse Jackson
Hello, friends. I’m sitting here quite moved as I watch the memorial service for my friend, Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Years ago, on his Rainbow Coalition broadcast, his daughter Santita was interviewing me about my album We Are Family, where I had the joy of singing R&B classics alongside some of the greats. Jesse called in unexpectedly and said something I never forgot. He told his listeners in Chicago that he believed I helped bridge divides in the 1950s by honoring Black artists and their music, and by welcoming them as fellow performers and friends.
I treasured that more than he ever knew. Today I honor him as a modern day apostle, motivated by the Holy Spirit, who lifted up generations with a simple, powerful truth: “I am somebody.”
Rest in peace, my brother Jesse Jackson.
