We also need to examine how ex-gratia payments are made, because clearly the decisions made by men in shadowy back rooms aren't good enough. We need an independent financial process and much more transparency because this is justice we’re talking about!
Meanwhile, a man who was wrongfully convicted for 19 years got $7 million back in 2019. This decision reeks of bad maths and misogyny.
Minns and Daley are two men who refused to even meet with Kathleen, a woman who has lost everything.
Premier Chris Minns and the Attorney General Michael Daley have offered Kathleen Folbigg "go away" money - just $2m, barely 20 years of wages, which means effectively zero actual compensation for Kathleen's 20 years of wrongful imprisonment.
Last week in London, Kathleen Folbigg shared her experience of being falsely accused and jailed for twenty years for killing her four children, alongside the team of scientists and lawyers who used advances in genomic science to exonerate her. The genomic investigation in Kathleen’s case was led by Prof Carola Vinuesa FRS FAA, an Academy Fellow and now Assistant Research Director at The Francis Crick Institute.
Our Chief Executive Anna-Maria Arabia OAM also spoke, addressing ‘Systems that can support decision-making in complex legal cases’.
"Every day we turn verified research, created by our leading scientists - one of which is Carola Vinuesa, she's one of 600 Fellows of our Academy - we turn that into actionable knowledge. We can rely on the magnificent and extraordinary intellect of the Fellows of the Academy, but actually, we can also rely on scientists across the world because we are able to convene them." — Anna-Maria Arabia OAM
The Academy continues working with both researchers and legal professionals to strengthen Australia’s legal and science systems, and to show the value of independent scientific advice—especially in cases involving complex or emerging science.

If you're a journalist covering the scrutiny on Lidia Thorpe in the Senate but not the dozens of dead Aboriginal women missing and murdered (12 this year alone), or the landmark NT Coroner's report calling this issue our "national shame", then I just have no words for you.
🇦🇺 Folbigg Fights For Compensation
▫Once branded a killer, Kathleen Folbigg says what happened next rubbed salt in her wounds

“Kathleen Folbigg was unfairly tried in 2003, something New South Wales’s judges have known perfectly well for at least seventeen years.”: https://t.co/RbdiBUqmZA
“The third category was “exemplary or punitive damages”. Rego said Folbigg “was convicted based on speculation rather than evidence, then the appeal courts failed to realise the system made a mistake”.”: https://t.co/5e1q2qIghc
Speculation, *and* her jurors’ internet research.
Kathleen Folbigg lost 4 children, served 20 years in jail for crimes she didn’t commit… and now the @ChrisMinnsMP@NSWLabor Gov. refuse to say when she can move on with her life.
Premier, how many more Christmases will she have to wait… ?!

Your intellect is unrivalled and your tenacity, unmatched. But what I admire the most about you is your courage. When you see an injustice, you stand up for what is right. You do not give up.
You are one in a generation.

Politicians cannot claim to care about child victims of sexual abuse while enacting punitive responses to youth crime.
This 12yo girl was being sexually exploited prior to murdering someone. Children don’t engage in serious acts of violence out of nowhere.
With so little time until #MarcellusWilliams is set to be executed tomorrow, Sept. 24th at 6 p.m., our best tool is our voice. We must make as much noise as possible in these final hours, as public pressure can make all the difference in the moments leading up to an execution.
Please, email, tweet or call Gov. Parson (@GovParsonMO) RIGHT NOW at 417-373-3400 and URGE him to step in and prevent Marcellus’ execution. https://t.co/2wq41v09Hj
