BESS system shipments experienced record growth in 2025, with the market highly dominated by Chinese system integrators. BYD overtook Tesla in 2025 to take the top spot, with Tesla now in second place and Sungrow in third. The three companies combined represented around a third of the systems market in 2025.

As EV sales ramp globally, surpassing 20 million units in 2025, the supply of batteries remain heavily concentrated.

China’s EV market is largely self‑supplied by domestic battery manufacturers - namely CATL, BYD, CALB, Gotion, Sunwoda, SVOLT, REPT, EVE, and Zenergy.

This dominance is underpinned by a high degree of vertical integration and control across the value chain.

South Korea remains the second‑largest supplier globally, with players such as LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On maintaining a strong presence, particularly in Europe.

In 2025, Chinese producers supplied 42% of Europe’s EV battery demand (+4p.p YoY), while Korean manufacturers retained the top spot with a 56% share.

The US benefits from a more diversified supplier base, spanning Korean, Japanese, US and Chinese companies.

While regions are pursuing greater supply chain resilience, the difficulty of competing with Chinese and Korean manufacturers (already scaled, cost‑competitive and integrated) means that they remain crucial to meeting near‑ and medium‑term demand.

Imported EVs made up 38% of all US EV sales in 2024. Meanwhile over half of ICE vehicles came from abroad.

In terms of exports, only 17% of all EVs produced in the US were exported and sold outside of the country.

Grid storage installations have grown rapidly in 2024 on the back of strong renewable deployments and record low cell and system prices. Across the three major markets a disparity in deployments and system price is growing.
