Ribchester Roman Museum is Lancashire's only dedicated Roman museum located on the site of the Roman fort of Bremetenacum near Preston, Blackburn and Clitheroe.
The Ribchester Helmet is a Roman bronze ceremonial helmet from the late 1st to early 2nd Century AD. Discovered in 1796 as part of the Ribchester Hoard in Lancashire, England, it is now displayed at the British Museum. Originally, the helmet featured a model of a sphinx, which has since been lost.
The helmet was not designed for battle protection but rather for showcasing elite horsemanship in events like hippika gymnasia, or cavalry sports.
