Riback Lab - Cellular Physical Chemistry Group

Research group @bcmhouston excited about biological condensates from molecular biophysics to organism physiology and disease. Lead by @SuperSciJew

1/ Do cells use phase separation to adapt biosynthetic output to changing demands? In our new preprint, we show that under nutrient limitation, the nucleolus enters a reversible ‘hibernation’ state that slows ribosome biogenesis. See https://t.co/urNZ4ORD16

[Josh Riback @SuperSciJew]

New @RibackLab preprint! The nucleolus's biophysical properties aren't fixed—they're tuned to energy availability. Under nutrient limitation nucleoli hibernate: stronger interactions, slower rRNA transport, rapid reversal upon refeeding. Led by incredible postdoc @Evdokiia_P 🧵👇

[Peggy Goodell @Goodell_Lab]

Hematology X biophysics = new leukemia pathogenesis paradigm! Our collaborative work with @RibackLab on NPM1c-mutant leukemia is live @CellCellPress! Multiple oncoproteins form similar nuclear condensates that massively drive leukemia-gene transcription!

Scientists uncover nuclear droplets that link multiple #leukemias revealing new #therapeuticTarget. @Gandhar_Datar @sciencyelmira @Goodell_Lab @RibackLab et al @CellCellPress @BCMGradSchool @bcmhouston https://t.co/QLZWCs3xAq

[Josh Riback @SuperSciJew]

Excited to share @RibackLab’s first paper in @CellCellPress. Together with @Goodell_Lab, we show that diverse leukemia mutations converge on a biophysically indistinguishable nuclear condensate—the C-body. Huge thanks to @Gandhar_Datar, @sciencyelmira, and co-authors!

[Gandhar Datar @Gandhar_Datar]

(1/10) How do diverse leukemia mutations converge on the same molecular program?
In our new study @CellCellPress,the @RibackLab and @Goodell_Lab show that disparate mutations rewire shared protein networks to form nuclear condensates called coordinating bodies (C-bodies).🫧

BRISKET IN - 24 hours to the summer lab party!!! @RibackLab #CellularPhysicalChemistryGroup

[Josh Riback @SuperSciJew]

In lab's #FIRSTPREPRINT, we present methods to measure nanometer organization around & between specific proteins in condensates. We uncover unexpected heterogeneity for a liquid-like phase with local meshwork spanning 10-50nm, stemming from ribosome biogenesis in the nucleolus.

Congrats to @BoeynaemsSteven on his lab turning TWO! We enjoy having him and his crew around to share our love of condensates with!!!

[Sovanny Taylor (Sophie) @sovannyruth]

Happy TWO YEAR anniversary to the lab 🎉🎉 thanks to our fearless team leader @BoeynaemsSteven & friends of the lab for celebrating with us a few weeks ago!! @JLeeLab & @RibackLab

[Peggy Goodell @Goodell_Lab]

Recruiting faculty to the Dept of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX! Recruiting broadly in cancer and cell biology. Submit by October 1, 2024, for full review. #cellbio @BCMhouston

Reflecting on last weekend's inaugural Riback Lab Summer Soirée 🎉. Immensely proud of our team's accomplishments 🏆! Here's to many more such moments 🥂! #RibackLab2023 @RibackLab #CellularPhysicalChemistryGroup

[Riback Lab - Cellular Physical Chemistry Group @RibackLab]

Congrats to @RibackLab members @Gandhar_Datar (co-advised with @Goodell_Lab) for winning the 3rd place talk award on AML condensate form and function and Kris for her @VisiTech_UK #iSIM microscopy image of nucleoli being chosen for the MCB retreat cover!

[Blair Benham-Pyle, PhD (she/her) @BlairBenhamPyle]

It’s the end of the day at the MCB retreat and we’re celebrating all the poster and talk awardees! Amazing job by the organizers and participants! Plus we got to see some animals at the Houston zoo :)

Additionally, Archish concluded #BPS2023 with his poster with some budding quantitative microscopy methods and the representing @RibackLab took a selfie to demark the occasion!

[Riback Lab - Cellular Physical Chemistry Group @RibackLab]

Congrats to @Gandhar_Datar , co-mentored student with @Goodell_Lab , for his awe-inspiring talk demonstrating that NPM1 mutant driven nuclear phase separation sustains HOX in models of leukemia, incomparably combining both rigorous cancer and biophysics research #BPS2023

[Riback Lab - Cellular Physical Chemistry Group @RibackLab]

Congrats Kris on her #BPS2023 talk today on our new method to measure condensate liquid structure in live cells! Great job co-chair of the session, @Gandhar_Datar !

[Josh Riback @SuperSciJew]

Hey everyone, the @RibackLab is at #BPS2023! Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the @BiophysicalSoc Annual Meeting this year as planned due to getting COVID. I'll miss seeing you all and learning about the latest research! 1/5

@VisiTech_UK @BioVisTech @HamamatsuPhoton @NikonInst @bcmhouston @Gandhar_Datar @Goodell_Lab @CalebRosenblad We are indebted to @JLeeLab for his critical role in this process from brainstorming to testing! Additionally to @CPRITTexas, without which the purchase of this jaw-dropping microscope would not be possible! 3/3

[Riback Lab - Cellular Physical Chemistry Group @RibackLab]

We are excited to officially announce the acquisition of our new microscope, an @VisiTech_UK instant SIM installed by @BioVisTech with a @HamamatsuPhoton quest on a @NikonInst body! #iSIMSaturday @bcmhouston 1/3

@VisiTech_UK @BioVisTech @HamamatsuPhoton @NikonInst @bcmhouston The iSIM impresses us with super-resolution (without decon!) without sacrificing speed or field of view. Here are images from @Gandhar_Datar (phase separation preacher to the @Goodell_Lab) and amazing roton @CalebRosenblad! Both taken with help of microscope master Archish! 2/3
