All positive reinforcement should start with ‘thanks for respecting X by doing Y’

Break down any new topic to a kid in subsets A-F.

They want you to hype up A in an intro.

Show them B in a demo.

Do C, D and E themselves with minimum required help.

And figure out F all by themselves.

They just learned A-F.

And that listening first pays off later

Kids would rather hear someone full of excitement talk about something boring for 10 mins compared to someone boring talk about something exciting for 10 seconds

I was doing a STEAM event at local teen center last night.

Girl says ‘These experiments are cool, I wish we did these at school. We learn about rocks in science class, so boring. You know why? Because they’re outside, they’re free, and our school has no money.’

I had no retort

Doing science experiments with teenagers at a school and I got into the weeds of an explanation and one says ‘no offense man but you’re kind of a nerd’

I said we’re all nerds at something (video games, braiding hair, baseball, anime, etc) so choose wisely

This is more valuable than just giving them the right idea directly. Don’t let them copy your thinking, make them prove your thinking wrong.

Very similar to ‘the fastest way to find the right answer is to post the egregiously wrong answer online and wait to be corrected.’

A student is stuck figuring something out and doesn’t know the first thing to do in order to solve it.

The best way a teacher can help is to give them a bad idea.

They’ll proudly say YOU’RE WRONG and be forced to come up with the opposite of that idea on their own.

@calebhicks I already told our team to ask it ‘how do I explain liquid density to an 8 year old?’ Do your own research, compare your description to AI’s, and use best from both. Do this for every lesson you’re teaching.
