Mamdani bloviates about his plan to build a $30 million, city-owned grocery store in Harlem next year while a heckler shouts through his speech:

I just offered a simple, common-sense amendment to Maryland’s HB774, which is the “Good Cause Eviction” bill that strips landlords of control over their own property. My amendment defined “substantial damage” exactly as it should be: any damage that exceeds the security deposit the tenant already paid to cover this exact situation.

It protects the real victim, the landlord, who risks his own money, pays the taxes, and maintains the building from tenants who wreck the place and force the owner to eat the loss. This makes sense, is fair, and is obvious. But not in Annapolis.

Democrats voted it down. They want the term left vague so tenant lawyers and activist judges can tie landlords up in court for months while the damage piles up. This is how Annapolis works. They punish responsibility, reward recklessness, and declare war on private property rights.

Landlords are not villains; they provide the housing that Democrats’ regulations are choking off. And they wonder why rent prices are skyrocketing? They are the cause of it. Marylanders deserve better, and contracts should mean something.
