#OnThisDay in 1942 the American cruiser USS Juneau was sunk by a Japanese torpedo with the lost of 687 men, including 5 Sullivan brothers: Joseph, Francis, Albert, Madison and George. Ten sailors survived.

#OnThisDay in 1940 HMS Jervis Bay, escorting Convoy HX 84, met the German cruiser Adm Scheer. Cpt Fegen scattered the convoy & engaged the Scheer until Jervis Bay sank. All but 5 out of 35 convoyed ships escaped.

A British naval force under Cradock was crushed by Admiral von Spee’s ships at Coronel #OTD 1914. Cradock lost 3 ships. The defeat was avenged at the Falklands on 8 Dec. Picture is contemporary German post card.

#OnThisDay in 1914 the cruiser HMS Hermes was sunk by U-27 in the Straits of Dover when transporting seaplanes. All but 22 of her complement of 470 survived. In 1915 U-27 was sunk the Q-ship Baralong.
