A little taste from my current novel, Fellowship of the Fallen.

He rose, shoulders trembling. “Whatever you are, inside my mind, you will not have me.” He gritted his teeth. His voice cracked with fury. “My mother,” he growled, “said, Go. Restore our house with honour. Something you will never understand, you evil spawn.”
The woman’s smile twisted. Her gentle laugh turned dark, warped, many-voiced, layered with wrongness. “Darius, Darius, Darius…” she cooed, “My son. You will EMBRACE ME.”
She charged, running through the grass like a revenant. The world around him began to bleed into ruin, like a pastel painting doused in rain, colours running wild, smearing sky into earth and memory into madness. The sky slid into hues of bruised violet. The mountains in the distance slumped like wax idols beneath a cruel sun. Even the grass, golden and proud only heartbeats ago, bowed low as if drowning.
He looked to his mother in utter horror. She was sprinting toward him, but her form too had begun to unravel, legs smearing at the edges, arms dragging trails of light behind them. Her face, so familiar, warped and weeping, as if time itself refused to remember her properly.

I myself loved to flick back to the map of my favourite novels whilst reading. The witcher, The Lord of the rings, The Sun eater series.
