1. Starmer digs his heels in, "We must focus on the job in hand & the Manchester mayoralty, etc"
2. Streeting kicks off the contest immediately (maybe even before Burnham is sworn in). He'll get enough support

@anniekathfox @britishmuseum @britishmuseum Hang on, it did actually let me in! The trick seemed to be that when you get shunted to the back of the queue, there's a very confusing link for Members to join the queue to book in. That then worked immediately (no more queuing), for me at least.

@DanNeidle It's actually only £35K, isn't it? The other £40K is contractual entitlement to pay in lieu of notice, which they really couldn't contest. In the circumstances, I reckon the taxpayer got off rather lightly.

@robfordmancs Another interesting aspect is that Reform made some amateurish mistakes - very bad expectations management has made a pretty good result look very poor, and the choice of candidate wasn't very clever for this seat.

@robfordmancs In past by-elections, the LibDems sometimes achieved spectacular victories by harnessing disparate protest votes against mid-term unpopular governments. Is this result really that different, other than a different label on the winning party?
