@DavidGHFrost You're both missing a key point, namely that public transport is a special case. The key benefits of an integrated network can only be achieved though control by the public sector (see the reply re bus journey trends in and outside London to illustrate).
@TransportPS Love the gas light! And on a similarly pleasant day 2 months later (May 69) here is a DMU together with a gas light at Charlbury on the Oxford to Worcester line.

@XT7412@YesterdaysBrit1 Not a Pacer - older than that! It's a lovely old Diesel Multiple Unit which were found throughout the country and you could sit behind the driver with a great view out of the front.
