In the 1930s, teams like the Cincinnati Reds began grouping players by their roles. Catchers, coaches, and managers wore single digits, infielders had numbers in the 10s, outfielders in the 20s, and pitchers used the 30s and 40s.
I remember Red Sox coaches in the 70s had sequentially numbered coaches in the 30s.

The Yankees initially assigned numbers based strictly on where a player sat in the batting order. Because he batted third, Babe Ruth was assigned #3, and Lou Gehrig was given #4 because he batted cleanup.
