This month in โ79, Rick James released his legendary third studio album, โFire It Up!โ
Driven by pure creative adrenaline, Rick recorded and completed the entire 8-track album in 13 days. As Rick later recalled: โMy creative output was crazy. I was on fire.โ
He blended smooth R&B melodies with contemporary West Coast hip-hop, bringing in rap heavyweights like Snoop Dogg and Rappin' 4-Tay, while uniting with soul legends Charlie Wilson, Bobby Womack, and his long-time muse Teena Marie on backing and guest vocals.
Serving as his 12th studio album, Urban Rapsody marked Rick's grand return following a nearly decade-long hiatus from recording. To bridge his signature 1980s funk sound with the booming 1990s music scene, Rick teamed up in the studio with an powerhouse lineup of collaborators.
