We can usually see the work that will be automated because it already exists. What we cannot see clearly are the new workflows, industries and jobs that automation will make possible.

- accounting automation did not eliminate accountants; it changed what accountants do; spreadsheets transformed finance by making new kinds of analysis possible
- newspapers were disrupted not only because journalism changed, but because the advertising business model underneath collapsed smartphones created industries
- few people could have predicted podcasts became a real creator economy only after the infrastructure existed
The lesson for AI: The future of work is not just substitution. It is reconfiguration.
Some tasks will disappear. Some jobs will change. New forms of demand will emerge. The difficult part is that we can see the first part more clearly than the second.
That is why the AI labor debate needs more history and less certainty.
