Today is an important election in Missouri and across the country. Voting is an incredible honor and a sacred duty for Americans. Our electoral system is the envy of the world, and for good reason!

In recent years, we have all seen our politics become more and more divided. From my perspective, it’s an unfortunate reality, but a reality nonetheless. I have also watched as many of my brothers and sisters of faith have become increasingly fearful of an outcome other than their preferred one.

I have seen statements from both sides saying, “If Donald Trump wins, this is the last election we will ever have,” or, “If Kamala Harris wins, we will never cast another legitimate vote.”

Nonsense.

There are two things I have believed for as long as I have been old enough to form my own opinion about our Republic and my beliefs within that governing system.

1 — Our Constitution and foundational principles are resilient and have withstood unrelenting pressure since the formation of our Republic. I still believe that to be true now and for the future. Saying that our country will be irreparably damaged if X candidate wins tells me that you are either trafficking in incredibly irresponsible rhetoric or simply don’t have the faith in this country that I, and many others, do. I invite you to discover, or rediscover, that faith. Your view of politics and its place in your life will be much better.

2 — God knows what He’s doing. If Kamala Harris wins today, He won’t be surprised. If Donald Trump wins today, He won’t be surprised. Proverbs 21:1 says, “The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” As a follower of Christ, I don’t put my faith in one political party being in power or in one candidate winning the presidency. If you do, you are bound to be disappointed many times throughout your life. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t hold beliefs and fight passionately for them, as I have done for the last twelve years during my time in office. It just means that your worldview isn’t dramatically swayed by worldly things. Christians who keep the main thing the main thing will have as much influence on their friends and neighbors as anything they could ever do in the world of politics.

We woke up today living in the greatest country in the world. We will wake up tomorrow with that same reality firmly rooted. God bless the great state of Missouri, and God bless the United States of America. #MOLeg #MOGov
