A scientist interested in how an animal's sensory experience influences its behavior. Mainly investigating animal navigation- so far in mantis shrimp and bees.
Excited to share our new paper with @StanleyHeinze and Julian Kempenaers @LundVision in @CurrentBiology showing path integration in walking bumblebees in the lab! This vector navigation behavior is highly amenable and remarkably stable to anesthetization and surgery. @MSCActions
Fresh off the press! Our new study @PNAS shows that bees memorize spatial vectors and can flexibly recall them at a familiar place to navigate home. The work provides a plausible foundation for how bees might achieve complex navigation by utilizing vectors to form a web-like map
@neuroethology @stanley_heinze @LundVision@PNASNews More work will be needed to test the hypothesis that bees actually do use a vector map for complex navigation, but we believe our study offers a foundation for the hypothesis.
@neuroethology @stanley_heinze @LundVision@PNASNews The reason I think what we do show is cool is that it opens up the possibility of a vector-based map that offers bees a truly robust and flexible scaffold with which to navigate.

Are you interested in studying weird and wonderful animal eyes? I'm on the lookout for 1-2 PhD students to join my new lab @mfnberlin and I would love to hear from you!
Several funding streams are available, including this one 👉 https://t.co/8t6m1TEnRx closing 25 March! Pls RT!
For those UK nationals sad not to be able to apply to our recently advertised PhD position, here's one for you. Cotutelle project with us and @pipilika_aj to compare mantis shrimp and bull ant navigation strategies. 50% in @BristolBioSci, 50% in @Macquarie_Uni. PM for details.
Very happy to share our new preprint showing that bumblebees path integrate over short distances in the lab while walking! Work with Julian Kempenaers and @stanley_heinze @LundVision @MSCActions https://t.co/2A2TS1tX8q
@JohnDKirwan @Lauren_hSR@DrKateFeller @YakirGagnon @DrDavidWilby Yes, this looks the easiest and probably cheapest considering the raspi alone is $35ish.
I am happy to share our recent publication @CurrentBiology. We show a state-dependent remapping of the head-direction system in monarch butterflies. At flight onset a sun compass is generated. @Uni_WUE@tamumonarchlab@LundVision https://t.co/VXWJJtrcJj
🚨 Abstract Submission Deadline Extension 🚨 The new deadline for #ABS2021 is May 14th! Get your abstract submitted to participate in world-class research sharing and networking!
Sensory ecology/neuro postdoc available in my supervisor Daniel Robert's lab @BristolBioSci on electroreception in insects and other arthropods - a new and exciting field and it would be great to expand the team. DM me for more info or email Daniel. Feel free to share/RT😃🐝🕷️⚡️
Mantis shrimp rely on vision to detect landmarks and other animals, among other tasks. What do mantis shrimp pay attention to when recognizing an object? Now in JEB, eight @UMBCBiology undergrads and I investigated if mantis shrimp recognize objects by their colors and/or shapes!
