The Making of Dipset. Photographs from “Triumph: Icons of Rap”, a book by Living Proof.
Formed in the summer of 1997 by Cam'ron and Jim Jones in Harlem, Dipset was a rap group originally consisting of Juelz Santana, Cam'ron, Jim Jones, and Freekey Zekey. Through their music, fashion, mixtapes, and street DVDs, Dipset became one of the most significant forces of early 2000s New York rap.
From Juelz Santana's American flag bandana to Cam’ron’s use of pink fur coats and mink jackets, Dipset created an instantly recognizable aesthetic that propelled their fame far past Harlem. With releases like Diplomatic Immunity and songs including “I Really Mean It” and “Hey Ma”, the group delivered music that spoke on life in Uptown New York with such charisma, that their influence is still felt decades later.
These photographs of Dipset were shot by Clay Patrick McBride in the early 2000s.
Living Proof has worked with Clay Patrick McBride to release a book on photographs documenting the golden era of rap’s defining artists during the creation of their most pivotal works.
“Triumph: Icons of Rap” will be sent to members of the Living Proof Patreon for the month of May 2026.

Listed as one of the New York Times “30 Greatest Songwriters’ alive, Jay-Z breaks down the art of writing in its purest form, where rhythm leads and the words follow.
“The flow comes first… then I fill it with words.”
From channeling jazz like Rakim to studying the unorthodox genius of The Notorious B.I.G., it’s a masterclass in making every word hit.
During Season 3 of The Wire , Robert Wisdom (Bunny Colvin) and Andre Royo (Bubbles) gathered the black actors together for this amazing picture. “We were just shooting the breeze one day and just marveling at the full array of talent that was coming together. This was the third year, and we came up with the idea to document this moment. At that point in television history, it hadn’t happened, and we figured it would probably be a long time before it happened again.” -Robert Wisdom (from the book #AllthePiecesMatter )
