Noyan Hejazi Arrested, Beaten and Transferred to Hospital Following Summons
On 16 June 2026, Mr. Noyan Hejazi, a Bahá’í resident of Juybar, was arrested by security forces after being summoned by telephone.
Mr. Hejazi had been contacted and instructed to report for the return of items previously seized, including his laptop, mobile phone, computer, and other personal belongings. While he was on his way to collect these items, he was detained in the street by security and intelligence forces in Sari.
At the time of his arrest he was taken into custody in a healthy and stable condition. However, hours later his family was informed that he had been transferred to a hospital.
His hospitalisation was due to injuries allegedly sustained from severe physical violence during the arrest and detention. These injuries include a cracked rib on the left side, caused by heavy kicks to the abdominal and chest area, as well as injuries to multiple parts of his body consistent with physical assault.
He is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital while still remaining in the custody of security forces.

Today is Juneteenth, honoring the end of slavery in the U.S and the continued efforts to eliminate prejudice and establish racial justice. How can you promote the equality and unity of our human family today?
Thank you to Francisco Assis, Member of the European Parliament, for meeting with our office alongside other civil society representatives to discuss human rights in Egypt.
The situation of the Bahá'ís in Egypt was highlighted, including the Court of Cassation's recent ruling invalidating Bahá'í marriages, a precedent which potentially reverses years of lower-court decisions that had begun to recognise marriages. The community also continues to face severe restrictions on burial rights, with cemeteries confiscated since a 1960 presidential decree and Bahá'ís across the country now largely confined to a single cemetery which has reached capacity.
