Ireland is supposedly a ‘low-tax’ country. The fact is that only applies if you are very wealthy. If you are rich, this is a low tax country where you can afford the best private services. For ordinary people this is a high-tax country with public services that are falling apart.
The Irish economy has grown by 36% in the last five years. We are a wealthy country, but ordinary people see none of it. It has been a political choice by Fianna Fáil & Fine Geal to leave working-class people out of the prosperity this country has seen over the past few years.
The least wealthy half of the country, 2.7 million people, own just €9 billion in wealth. The richest one percent of Ireland, 50,000 people, own €232 billion and are gaining it seventy times faster.
That growing over concentration of economic and political power is bending our society towards massive profits for the very few at the expense working-class peoples’ ability to get homes or healthcare or make ends meet.
We need a change in this country. We need to end this growing inequality by raising wages for ordinary people, rolling-back privatisation, and by changing our tax system so the super-rich and big corporations pay their fair share.
That change can start tomorrow if you vote to end 100 years of Fianna Fáil and Fine Geal and elect Left candidates with the political will to fight back against the massive wealth inequality and put that money back into public housing, services and infrastructure.
Happy to have two of lads from @WaterworkersIre down to the office when I signed the #RespectAtWork pledge
I have always stood with workers for better rights, pay and conditions. I was an An Post clerk for 30 years and always active in the CWU
All workers deserve respect at work
The State built tens of thousands of public homes when this country was broke. We are now the richest we have ever been. We can build those homes again, but we need a left Government with the political will to do so.
When I was growing up ordinary workers could get a council house, bin men, nurses, council workers. We need to raise the income thresholds so ordinary people have access to council homes again and get back to building 3- and 4-bed family homes.
The only way to get out of this crisis is to change housing delivery from prioritising private profits to prioritising providing people with homes. To do that, we need a mass public housing campaign led by a State-company.
Now the major parties are playing auction politics on housing targets. Who can shout the highest number. People know ending the housing crisis will come down to the strategy used, not the numbers politicians promise during an election.
Had we continued to build public housing at the same rate as the 1960’s and 70’s, we would have built an over 400,000 extra public homes. Enough to empty the housing list four times over.
MY POLICY ON HOUSING: PUBLIC HOUSING ON PUBLIC LAND
There is one way out of this housing crisis, build public housing on public land and reverse the disastrous privatised housing policies that Fianna Fáil and Fine Geal have put in place since the 1980’s.
My second the amendment did not even get to be made as the Government shut down the debate after 60 minutes.
We have huge energy companies making billions in profits and the Government cares more about the next election than people being able to afford to keep their homes warm.
The Government rushed through the Social Welfare Bill to set-up their election. I submitted two amendments; one to extend the Fuel Allowance to people on the Working Family Payment, the other to raise the Household Benefits Package as it has not been increased in over 4 years
People with a disability accessing the Cost Rental Scheme are only entitled a maximum of 24% of the Housing Adaptation Grant
The Government's 'flagship' housing scheme is financially inaccessible for many people with a disability
I asked Harris what he is going to do about this
