September is International Literacy Month & this year marks 60 years of International Literacy Day. On 15 September, the R2R team celebrated it by joining African Spelling Bee & Gauteng Education Dept. @EducationGP1 at Everest Primary School in Newclare for a local spelling bee.
We also unpacked the 4Ts underpinning the campaign, reminding everyone in the room that literacy builds people, strengthens communities and opens doors to a more prosperous future, and its starts with the support children receive from all of us.
Our hope is that by the time the 61st anniversary of International Literacy Day comes about, the 81% of Foundation Phase children who cannot read for meaning, will have been reduced; and that the regulations to improve this will have been implemented.

The R2R team speaks on how they were introduced to literature, and how foundational literacy being a part of one’s formative years, is a catalyst being able to participate fully and meaningfully, in education and society.

On this International Literacy Day, we reaffirm our call for meaningful, enforceable action to ensure that every child has the opportunity to become a reader.
Literacy is a right. Reading is fundamental. It is time to make the right to read a reality.

What book sparked your love of reading?
Ahead of International Literacy Day tomorrow, our co-founder, Mme Xolisa Guzula, takes us back to the books that sparked her love of reading and helped shape her journey.
The stories we encounter as children can stay with us for life. They can shape how we see ourselves, introduce us to new worlds and inspire us to dream bigger.
So, we want to know: What was the book that made you fall in love with reading? 👇🏾

South Africa’s literacy crisis demands more than commitments. It requires meaningful & enforceable action.
In @dailymaverick today, Prof Faranaaz Veriava argues that literacy must be legally recognised and enforced as an immediate constitutional right.

While many more women have helped build and shape the LRC, this Women’s Day we honour Felicia Kentridge, Pinky Madlala, Durkje Gilfillan and Nomfundo Gobodo. Their work helped make the law more accessible and strengthened its power to protect people. #WomensDay
