Ilhan Omar speaks of a "genocide" of Muslims in India from thousands of miles away. I am an Indian Muslim. My family is Indian Muslim. Millions of us vote, study, build businesses, serve in government, appear on television, become judges, diplomats, artists, and parliamentarians.

Words matter. A genocide is what happened to Jews in Europe, Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, and Tutsis in Rwanda. It is not a word to be casually thrown at a country that is home to one of the world's largest Muslim populations.

India is not perfect. No society is. But reducing 200 million Indian Muslims to helpless victims is not solidarity. It is condescension.

The tragedy is not that Ilhan Omar knows too little about India. The tragedy is that she seems uninterested in listening to the very people she claims to speak for.

We do not need foreign politicians to tell us who we are. We can speak for ourselves.
