Exploitation doesn’t always look like chains.
The case reported by the BBC today shows the horrific reality of how modern slavery can be hidden in everyday life especially when the victim has a cognitive impairment.
Research by the @rightsbeacon shows adults with cognitive impairments face heightened risk of exploitation, including forced labour, financial abuse and coercive control - yet these harms are too often missed or misunderstood.
When coercion is mistaken for “choice”, abuse can continue unchecked. We must do better.

Developing an effective response to modern slavery requires an understanding of the extent of the issue, but estimates for the number of UK victims vary considerably; Professor Todd Landman and policy engagement and impact lead Vicky Brotherton of the University of Nottingham-based Rights Lab believe a change to the way data is recorded would provide a more accurate estimate that is likely to be much higher than current figures.
