Soil represents a major carbon sink that could help mitigate climate change. The carbon stored in soil exceeds the amounts contained in all plants and the atmosphere combined. Even marginal fluctuations in soil carbon at large scales can significantly impact atmospheric CO2 levels and, consequently, the climate.

By employing agricultural practices and land management strategies that promote carbon sequestration and storage in soil, it may be possible to offset a substantial portion of human greenhouse gas emissions. Harnessing the natural ability of soil to act as a carbon reservoir could provide a crucial tool in the efforts to mitigate climate change challenges.
