In 2002, Gujarat CM Narendra Modi sat in front of a BBC camera and admitted his one real weakness:
“One area where I was very, very weak… that was how to handle the media.”

He never forgot that lesson. He just decided the media should never be allowed to become a problem again.
Fast forward to 2026.
Between March and July, the government sent one blocking order every 68 seconds to Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

1.95 lakh orders in five months.
1,275 every single day.
Instagram — the platform students used during the Jantar Mantar protests — received more than 1 lakh of them.
Last year the daily average was six.

This is not “managing” the media.
This is industrial-scale silencing.

The same playbook that started with ED and CBI cases against NDTV, the takeover of Network18, and UAPA against NewsClick’s founder is now running on autopilot through the Sahyog portal. Content vanishes in three hours. Often without anyone even seeing the order.

A government that needs to issue a takedown every 68 seconds is not confident.
It is terrified of what people will say when they are not being watched.

That is how you stay in power for this long — not by answering questions, but by making sure the questions never reach the public.

When dissent is treated as a security threat and protest as a crime, the media is no longer a watchdog. It is just another department to be controlled.
The 2002 admission was honest.

The 2026 response is the real story. 68 seconds.
That’s how long this government takes to silence you.
