Never forget that 3D animation cost a lot of money. For them to go out of their way to have Riku touch Sora’s shoulder to his face, and Sora touch Riku’s waist, they had to spend extra budget on that. Making them look right at each other just as the camera pans off-screen.
Sanctuary: “Wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I” is reversed to, “I need more affection than you know”. Though Nomura & Utada never assigned any specific characters to the lyrics, the song was specifically chosen to match Sora & Riku’s reunion. As confirmed by Ultimania.
The famous KH2 reunion. Towards the end of the game we finally have Sora meet Riku again after spending the majority of the game actively looking for him. What stood out the most was the following actions the production team and Nomura took when creating these two scenes.
Utada Hikaru delivered the final track (Passion / Sanctuary), the production team then edited the final cutscenes to synchronize with the music, using the song's emotional peaks to highlight the reunion between the two.
Almost 25 years of KH lore and my only major takeaway is that literally every single character is either a Sora or a Xehanort. Trying to explain after two decades, only to realize I’m just explaining 50 different variations of Sora fighting 50 different variations of Xehanort.
@DaiiMercury Agreed. Sora has hugged/held hands with Riku and Kairi, and I don’t view that as romantic moments. Skinship is very normal between close friendships. I don’t believe you have to be in love to show affection to someone important to you.
Western localization forces a surface-level romance onto SoKairi, but the original JP script is about a deep, cosmic bond. Rushing to make it a conventional love story strips Kairi of her independent strength and reduces her growth to a plot device.
ppl dont realize this is not a one time thing! kh3 suffered a lot thanks to the localization team which often erased context and just translated whatever the hell they wanted!!!!!
@sc0urgehere Sora openly admits in KH3 that he still doesn’t properly understand all types of love and I think that is very realistic. He has been busy saving the world since he was 14. Not living a slice of life. Emotional and Romantic maturity are very different and both take time.

I have a hard time believing Sokairi will ever be canon not because they aren’t allowed to, but because after 20 years they been actively avoiding that. Even the end of KH3 separated them again. It’s hard to tell if KH4 will actively change that or if Kairi will be sidelined.
As a writer I often analyze why other creators make specific choices when it comes to romance. When I look at KH as a whole I don’t see a romance story. If anything it’s everything but that. I see a story of sacrifice, pain, mental struggles and what true bonds are made of.
Sora will forever be stuck in this middle ground of never being allowed to grow up and marry, have a family. Because growing up and settling doesn’t make corporations money. Wanting to retain the illusion of childhood adventure stops the moment a character becomes an adult.
