Tibetan activist Loga Rangzen has died after self immolating outside the UN headquarters in New York.

In his final message, he called for a free Tibet, unity among Tibetans, and an end to China's occupation and repression.

For Tibetans, self immolation is not an act of violence against others. It is the ultimate sacrifice, chosen when every other avenue to speak, protest, and seek justice has been silenced.

Loga Rangzen gave his life for the freedom of Tibet and the dignity of his people.

The question is not why Tibetans continue to self immolate.

The question is why the world continues to ignore the suffering that drives them to it.

Sikyong Penpa Tsering, on behalf of the Tibetan people and Central Tibetan Administration, has issued an urgent appeal to governments, foreign ministries, parliamentarians, think tanks, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) worldwide through official correspondence and virtual distribution, calling attention to the People’s Republic of China’s newly enacted “Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress Law".

Scheduled to take effect on 1 July 2026, the legislation, portrayed by Beijing as a measure to strengthen national unity and social harmony, instead provides a comprehensive legal framework for accelerating the assimilation of Tibetans and other ethnic minorities by weakening their distinct languages, cultures, religions, and identities in the name of “ethnic unity".

In his appeal, Sikyong Penpa Tsering argues that the law transforms long-standing assimilation policies into legal obligations by mandating Mandarin-medium education, encouraging demographic engineering through mixed communities and intermarriage, expanding state surveillance, and extending China’s jurisdiction beyond its borders to target critics and members of the Tibetan diaspora. Describing the legislation as a grave threat to the future of the Tibetan people, Sikyong calls on governments and the international community to oppose the law, press for its repeal, support international investigations into its human rights implications, hold those responsible accountable, and renew efforts to advance a peaceful resolution of the Sino-Tibet conflict through meaningful dialogue.

🚨 I finally finished translating and editing this 37-minute documentary on the “Jiangyou Incident.” It covers the large-scale protests that erupted in the past few days in Jiangyou City, Sichuan Province—only 21 miles (35 km) from my hometown, Mianyang.

❤️‍🔥What impressed me most:

1⃣ The courage of my fellow Sichuaners, who stood up for a girl they likely didn’t even know.

2⃣ During the protest, people shouted “Give us back our democracy!”, demanded that officials “step down,” and—even though it’s not included in this video—some were heard yelling “Down with the CCP.”

3⃣ This isn’t over yet. Today, Chinese netizens exposed the personal information of the police commanders and perpetrators seen in the video—including their home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and national ID numbers. It seems the Chinese people are more determined than ever to hold them accountable. This will surely send a clear message to anyone who might be ordered to suppress the public in the future.

✅ I hope everyone can share this video to encourage these brave—yet still silenced—Chinese citizens. Let their voices be heard. Let them free themselves.

This is what the protesters shouted while the police fired stun grenades and tear gas to suppress them.

🔥This happened in the early hours of August 5 (local time), in Jiangyou, Sichuan—my hometown!

😢The protest was sparked by a horrific incident on July 22, when a 14-year-old girl was violently bullied—her clothes were stripped off, a video was recorded, and then posted online. Despite public outrage, the perpetrators faced little to no punishment. Outraged citizens continued to speak out for the young girl, only to be met with police crackdowns and violent suppression using stun grenades and tear gas.
