🚨 Arjen Robben on constantly seeing Michael Olise compared to him at Bayern:
“At first I thought people were being lazy.
Left footed, plays on the right, cuts inside and shoots. Okay, so immediately he’s the new Robben. [laughs]
Then I started watching him properly.
I thought, ‘Ah… okay. I see the problem.’
The way he carries the ball on that left foot is very similar. The touch before he accelerates, the movement inside, the way he prepares the shot while the defender still thinks he’s deciding what to do.
And of course everybody knows where he wants to go.
That part I understand very well. [laughs]
People used to ask , ‘Arjen, if everybody knows you’re cutting inside, why does it keep working?’
Because knowing where I’m going and stopping me from getting there are two different things.
I see that with Michael.
But he’s becoming a serious playmaker as well.
Sometimes I watch him come inside and I’m waiting for the shot because that’s what I would’ve done. Then he slips somebody through and I think, ‘No, Michael. We’re supposed to shoot there.’ [laughs]
Bayern spent years looking for another Robben and Ribéry.
I think they can stop looking on my side now.
Michael has taken that right wing and made it his own. He doesn’t need to become the next Arjen Robben.
Although if he keeps cutting inside onto that left foot, people are going to keep mentioning me. That’s his problem, not mine.
Now Bayern only have one job left.
Find Franck’s replacement.
I’ve done my part.”
