Jerry Lawler spent more than half a century putting Memphis on the wrestling map. Today, Memphis put Jerry Lawler on its own map.

The city officially unveiled Jerry “The King” Lawler Street—the honorary renaming of Homer Street near Treadwell Middle School—as Jimmy Hart, Dave Brown and the Memphis community joined the celebration.

Our contributor Big Mike was there to document history as it happened. Every photograph in this collage is his—including the great shot of Mike with Lawler and Jimmy Hart.

Many champions have passed through Memphis. Only one became The King. Now his name lives on in the streets of the city he helped make famous.

Ted Turner, who passed away today at the age of 87, created or had a hand in 3 important things that shaped my childhood

1. He created the ‘Captain Planet’ cartoon series with Barbara Pyle to educate young people on pollution and deforestation

2. He owned and led WCW through its glory days, when it was consistently beating WWE, formerly WWF, in ratings. Under his leadership the NWO was founded, the rise of Sting & Goldberg

3. Most importantly, he created the Cartoon Network in 1992, the first 24 hour channel dedicated to cartoons which went on to make shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, and much more

Just finished this. Not going to lie, the last few minutes made me cry. I grew up watching him. Was he a perfect human being? No, he was not. None of us are. Did he make mistakes? Yes, he did. We all do. But I thank him for all the memories and how he made me feel as a kid watching him wrestle. Thank you Hulk Hogan. Gone too soon. Rest in Peace Brother!!!
