Christian Maxwell Unveils SouthSide Reparations Proposal at City Hall Housing Committee

Republican congressional candidate Christian Maxwell, who is challenging incumbent Jonathan Jackson for Illinois' 1st Congressional District, appeared before Chicago's Committee on Housing and Real Estate to introduce what she describes as the first major policy proposal of her campaign.

The committee is chaired by Byron Sigcho-Lopez, who currently serves as chairman of the City Council's Committee on Housing and Real Estate and has also launched a congressional campaign in Illinois' 4th Congressional District.

Speaking before the committee, Maxwell outlined what she calls the "SouthSide Reparations Act," a place-based economic redevelopment proposal focused on neighborhoods throughout Chicago's South Side.

According to Maxwell, the program would not be funded with taxpayer dollars. Instead, she argues that private fundraising efforts similar to those that helped finance the Obama Presidential Center could be utilized to invest directly into communities that have experienced decades of disinvestment.

"This is a place-based program, not a race-based program," Maxwell said. "The damage affected entire communities. Damage knew no color."

Maxwell said her proposal is intended to address long-standing concerns involving housing, economic development, property ownership, neighborhood investment, and quality of life throughout Illinois' 1st Congressional District.

"The people are my concern," Maxwell stated. "I see the struggles of residents across the First District who have been waiting for real help while politicians continue putting themselves first."

The proposal represents the first in what Maxwell says will be a series of policy initiatives released during her campaign for Congress.

So here are the reasons why millions are being taken off SNAP

The most significant changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is that it requires ABLE-BODIED adults WITHOUT DEPENDENTS between 18 -64 to work, volunteer, or participate in job training for a minimum of 80 hours per month

Imagine that, a requirement to work if you are able to. I work 160 hours per month to pay for the SNAP benefits

Eligibility based on immigration status has changed. Previously ELIGIBLE IMMIGRANTS may no longer qualify

Caregivers are exempt from the work requirements as long as they are caring for an incapacitated person. The incapacitated person does not have to live in the same household as the caregiver

Food stock requirements of authorized SNAP retailers must stock seven varieties across four staple food categories, protein, grains, dairy, fruits, and vegetables.

They invested in their homes.

He planted his center in a RESIDENTIAL area right near homes and schools.

Which caused some resident's property taxes to skyrocket as much as 700%.

This is inhumane.

His center should have GONE somewhere else and because he REFUSED to hear people out when they spoke up over and over again, he can PAY up!

The southside made Woodlawn and the surrounding areas desirable enough for that center to force its way in.

Pay them what you owe them to mitigate the harm that they endured.
