Being in school does not always mean a child is learning.
UNICEF reports that almost 70% of Nigeria’s primary pupils cannot read simple words, while only 27% of children aged 7–14 had foundational reading skills in the 2021 MICS data.
So, what is behind the gap?
Nigeria’s 2025 Managing Violence in Schools handbook recognises that violence can occur on school grounds, during school activities and even on the journey to and from school.
So when we talk about school safety, we have to look at the whole journey.
Safe to Learn.

The Nigeria we hope for tomorrow starts with the opportunities we create for children today.
At RHGE, we remain committed to helping create spaces where girls can learn, feel safe and grow into their potential.
Happy Independence Day.

We’re starting a longer conversation about reading, literacy and the gaps that too many children face.
Reading Matters is only getting started. 📚
#ReadingMatters#Literacy#RHGE
Across four schools, students highlighted concerns including bullying, sexual harassment, violence & abuse, forced labour and gangsterism as the prominent SRGBV issues they experience, though different from school to school.
Over the coming Fridays, we’ll explore these issues.
A child can be in school every day and still struggle to read and understand what they are learning.
Over the next few months, we'll be talking about the realities behind literacy gaps, especially for children in underserved communities.
Not just statistics, but the children.
We hear about SRGBV and TFGBV, but do we really understand what they mean?
Violence can happen at school, in our communities, and online.
Understanding it is a step towards preventing it.
Every learner deserves a safe place to learn.
