Hundreds of farmers have descended upon central London, with tractors lining the streets in protest against the government’s inheritance tax policy, which farmers say threatens the survival of family-owned farms and the future of British agriculture.

Married couples can combine their allowances, raising the tax-free threshold to £3 million for their estates. The government argues that the measure, dubbed the “tractor tax,” will generate additional revenue to fund strained public services, claiming it will impact only a small number of farms.

What’s going on now: In response to the government’s proposed inheritance tax changes, hundreds of farmers organized a massive protest in central London, with tractors blocking streets near Parliament as part of the “RIP British Farming” campaign. The protest, led by groups such as Save British Farming and Kent Fairness for Farmers, brought together farmers from across the country to demand the government reverse the so-called “tractor tax.” Farmers argue the policy threatens the survival of family-run farms, jeopardizes food security, and undermines generations of agricultural heritage. Protesters held signs reading “No Farmers, No Food, No Future.”

Many farmers also voiced frustrations over the mounting financial pressures they face. Years of declining profitability have been driven by intense competition within Britain’s supermarket sector, pushing prices down and cheap agricultural imports flooding the market. Post-Brexit subsidy cuts have further tightened margins, leaving many farms struggling to stay afloat. Rising fuel, equipment, and fertilizer costs have added to the strain.
