Sometimes when a star dies, it leaves some energy behind. Our nuclear fuel is a 5 billion year old gift from the milky way. This brings new meaning to the phrase "Thank your lucky stars!"
@whatisnuclear@isabelleboemeke Until US maritime reactors get the same whole-of-gov level of support like Savannah, the effort will have to be industry-led, and that means developing a US-flagged/owned/operated vessel that the navy isn’t worried could be dual use.
I want to see it happen just like you!
@whatisnuclear@isabelleboemeke Also having too much overlap between civilian and Naval designs is a non-starter for NNSA / ITAR. But that’s just the US context. Who knows about china.
@whatisnuclear@isabelleboemeke Very true but the supply chain today for PWRs at sea is entirely geared to navy. The maritime sector sees that configuration (and the required staffing and fuel enrichments) as too expensive.
