Before the new year, we installed soil moisture sensors in the Upper Calder as part of our aeration project.
Funded by the Environment Agency & Calderdale Council, the data will help us measure infiltration & reduced run-off to support natural flood management.
In 2025, our Fluvial Geomorphologist, Adam, has undertaken a huge amount of Modular River Physical Surveys (MoRPh) to assess the physical habitat and overall condition of rivers. He's completed 93 surveys, covering 11.5km of river. A huge thanks to all the volunteers who helped!
Yorkshire Waterโs hosepipe ban has lifted, but the importance of managing water well doesn't stop.
This year Calder Rivers Trust has aerated 140ha of upland grassland, created 2 wetlands, and developed 5 farm-scale NFM projects.

Working with the farmer, landowner & a wetland engineer, weโve created a new wetland system that fits the landscape & delivers big benefits โ improving water quality, boosting biodiversity, & helping build resilience to drought & flood. Monitoring is underway as it settles in!
We regularly work with farmers and landowners, aiming to make our catchment resilient to both flood and drought. Our latest project, funded by @Calderdale and @EnvAgency, has aerated 140ha of land in Calderdale to improve infiltration and soil health.
Weโre working with @Calderdale@KirkleesCouncil@EpiksK @moorsforfuture to co-design a 20-year Landscape Recovery plan. Using baseline habitat data & mapping, weโre supporting sustainable farming, nature recovery & catchment resilience. More to come as the project develops! ๐ฟ

Our live Water Stewardship projects aims to hold water in the landscape, creating habitat and building resilience.
We are welcoming the recent rain but still seeing the impacts of drought across our catchment. We continue to work with landowners on hedgerows, ponds, wetlands & river restoration for a more climate-resilient landscape.
