“All things on earth point home in old October; sailors to sea, travellers to walls and fences, hunters to field and hollow and the long voice of the hounds, the lover to the love he has forsaken.”

“One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one’s cheeks burned…”
-O. Henry in The Gift of the Magi
“Spring came that year like magic and like music and like song. One day its breath was in the air, a haunting premonition of its spirit filled the hearts of men with its transforming loveliness…”
—Thomas Wolfe, “The Train and the City,”
“The air was strangely quiet. All the noises of the city were muted here into a distant hum, so unceasing that it seemed to belong to silence.”

“Snow in the South is wonderful. It has a kind of magic and mystery that it has nowhere else. And the reason for this is that it comes to people of the South not as a grim, unyielding tenant of Winter’s keep, but as a strange and wild visitor from the secret North.”
-Thomas Wolfe

Riverside Cemetery’s office (built by Anthony Lord) has primarily East facing windows.Until the mid 50s the office was not supplied with electricity. East facing windows meant the workday could start earlier without relying on gas lamps.
