Thirty metres may not sound like much, but small restoration projects can have a lasting impact.
This project transformed a straight, heavily modified chalk stream into a naturally meandering channel designed to restore natural processes and create better habitat for wildlife. 🌿

The works included:
• Excavating a new sinuous channel.
• Installing locally sourced spawning gravels.
• Using laser levelling to optimise flow and reduce sediment build-up.
• Relocating existing planting and introducing native marginal species and water crowfoot (Ranunculus)

Many rivers were heavily modified for milling centuries ago, creating deep impounded sections that differ significantly from natura river conditions.

Today, a lot of restoration work focuses on carefully reversing or mitigating those impacts.
