My rule for casting in narrative fiction is simple: as long as the character’s race isn’t central to the story, you have a great deal of latitude. Be convincing.
Alec Guinness can be Prince Faisal.
James Franco can be Fidel Castro.
Javier Bardem can be Desi Arnaz.
Denzel Washington can be Macbeth.
Jacob Elordi can be Heathcliff.
If they remake Ghost, a white actress can be Oda Mae Brown.
And yes, the lovely Lupita Nyong’o can be Helen of Troy.
