🚨URGENT — Jesus Manuel Arenas Silva was found "unresponsive" after being denied medical care by ICE agents in Georgia. He is the 4th person killed by ICE in the past week and the 22nd person to die in ICE custody this year.

On July 14, Georgia-based immigrant rights groups affiliated with the Detention Watch Network revealed that Jesus Manuel Arenas Silva died at the age of 45 while in ICE custody. His sister has come out to reveal that Arenas Silva had medical conditions for which ICE agents refused him medication.

His death happened on the same day that Joan Sebastian Guerrero was murdered by ICE agents on the streets of Biddeford, Maine and 6 days after Lorenzo Sagaldo Araujo was gunned down in Houston.

These tragedies expose another side of the assault on immigrant communities: the vast network of ICE
"detention centers" where concerns about inadequate care have long been documented.

The facility where Arenas Silva was jailed before his death, Irwin Detention Center, was even shut down in 2021 after a scandal of widespread medical abuse including forced sterilization of women inmates. However it was reopened in 2025.

Georgia sits at the center of the massive system of immigrant incarceration. It is home to several of the nation's largest immigration detention facilities, including in addition to Irwin, Stewart Detention Center and Folkston ICE Processing Center. The detention network continues to expand and there were even plans to convert a massive warehouse, unfit to house humans, in Social Circle, GA into another large-scale ICE detention facility but this was defeated after public outrage.

This is a systemic problem that extends beyond any one administration. The immigrant detention system has been built, funded, and maintained under both Republican and Democratic governments. Lasting change will require confronting the system itself — not only the party currently in power.
