@JSS779 I'm not convinced PAL brings much to the alliance overall. Cathay, Malaysia, JAL and Qantas mean Oneworld already has good Far East coverage. About 200K Filipino diaspora in the UK, but I don't see where the high yield comes from for direct European flights.

@geraldposner @mirandadevine Business idea: wider seats at a premium. Add snacks/drinks and some fripperies for the extra charge. I'd call it something like "first class".

American should buy Alaska and let Alaska's team run it. I said it in August. Former United CEO Oscar Muñoz now agrees.

He said of Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci: “From what I hear, he’s a great operator who understands that airlines aren’t just airplanes and schedules, but they’re people serving people.”

AA has great assets, but it keeps trying to be a low-cost leader in a revenue world. It needs a management team that can craft a coherent strategy and change the culture to make it real.

Alaska has shown it can adapt: last week's lie-flat 737s, premium economy and global expansion are a huge leap from its regional low-cost past.

I hope Minicucci and team get the chance to do it at a bigger scale.

@geraldposner There's also the value local newspapers provide for research. What seems like minutiae at the time becomes the pieces that put together a story. From about the mid-2000s there's a lot less detail about local stories and social media Is too ephemeral to be a substitute.
