Former Crown prosecutor turned criminal defence lawyer. Husband, dad, runner, moto rider and social media noob looking for greater meaning in life and the law.
Have no doubt that the rule of law and democracy itself is under attack in the US. Congress has abdicated its duty and the current regime is aware only the judiciary stands in the way of absolute power. The future of the Republic now rests in the hands of the US Supreme Court.
Our PM in waiting has proposed life sentences for so-called Fentanyl "kingpins" who traffic in over 40 milligrams. Not only would this not pass Charter muster but would target the lowest tier of traffickers - many addicted to Fentanyl themselves.
Did a Global News interview on the serial groper case. I understand the outrage over the light sentence but my best guess is there were significant mitigating factors before the judge. Discharge would not be an available sentence if the max for sex assault was over 14 years.
1st degree murder carries a life sentence. Release is not automatic after 25 years because the Parole Board makes the final call. This discretion allows our system of justice distinguish between a 1-time murderer versus multiple deaths. I think it passes constitutional muster.
The so-called "woke" era is losing ground rapidly from the top down. Higher levels of gov face greater media and political pressure and must change with the times faster than lower levels. The new political reality is difficult to accept for many including this school board.
Playing politics with criminal justice issues is costly. Gun buy back program will cost approx 2 billion and be ineffective as 90% of illegal guns come from the US. That same 2 billion spent at the border would have actually reduced gun crime and helped with tariff negotiations.
We are in the populist era of pendulum politics. We were progressive on crime until public disorder made for bad press. A declining economy means the vote getter for the remainder of this decade will be getting tough on crime. When that doesn't work we will be progressive again.
The US is slashing the Fed bureaucracy, BC has frozen new hires and the Canadian Fed is following suit. The remainder of this decade will be the era of retrenchment. Tough times ahead. https://t.co/23ytBpojIp
