What if someone you love died… and you had no idea whether your prayers were helping them?

In 1657, a young girl at Montserrat in Spain was grieving the death of her father. She could not stop thinking about him. She believed he might be in Purgatory, and more than anything, she wanted to help him.

So she went to a Benedictine abbot and begged him to offer three Masses for her father’s soul. The abbot saw how serious she was, so he agreed.

But during the first Mass, the girl suddenly saw something near the altar. She said her father was there, kneeling near the lowest step and surrounded by flames.

No one else could see him, so they wanted to know if what she was seeing was real. A small piece of cloth was brought near the place where she said the flames were, and it caught fire.

Her father, she believed, was still being purified.

But that was only the first Mass.

During the second Mass, she saw him again. This time, something was different. The flames were gone. He was standing higher near the altar, dressed in bright clothing, and his suffering seemed to be less.

So when the third Mass began, the girl watched closely. Would she see him again?

She did.

But this time, her father was dressed completely in white. And when the Mass came to an end, she suddenly cried out: “Look, my father is leaving and going up to heaven!”

According to this old Catholic account, the girl had watched her father appear differently at each Mass. First suffering. Then relief. Then peace.

The Church teaches that the souls in Purgatory are already saved, but they are still being purified before entering Heaven. And our prayers can help them, especially the Holy Mass.

So if someone you love has died, do not think there is nothing left you can do for them. Pray for them. Offer a Mass for them.

Because even if you cannot see what your prayers are doing, they may be helping someone you love more than you realize.
