The suspect has been identified as Steven Luu, 38.

According to reports, he was arrested near the scene and appeared on several charges, including arson and possession of incendiary material. Two Molotov cocktails were reportedly thrown into Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom after windows were broken at the back of the building.

Now we are hearing about mental health. Fine. Investigate that too. But mental illness does not answer the question of target selection.

This was not an abandoned building. It was not a random wall. It was not an empty lot.
It was a synagogue.

A Jewish house of worship.

In Montreal.

This was not an isolated event in this city. Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom had already been marked with a giant swastika in February 2025. Beth Tikvah in DDO was firebombed. Jewish schools were shot at. The Bagg Street Shul was defaced. Jewish institutions in this city have been repeatedly targeted.

And yet, somehow, Jews are already being accused online of “playing the victim card” for noticing the obvious.

We are not “playing victim” when we notice that Jewish institutions keep becoming targets. The Jewish community should not be expected to absorb attacks on its places of worship. We should not be expected to stay quiet while everyone else rushes to explain why it probably had nothing to do with us.

Maybe the investigation will establish hate. Maybe it will not. But the speed with which people seem eager to move away from that possibility tells Jewish Montrealers everything we need to know.

We demand a serious investigation. We demand that police pursue every available warrant, device search, forensic review, and investigative avenue required to determine motive. We demand the hate-motivated angle fully examined. And we want transparency throughout this process.
