Too early to say Birmingham Council is ungovernable. But definitely needs to be a fundamental & urgent overhaul in the way it’s governed. Including a huge shift towards localisation. Whoever ends up running the Council could bring all political Groups together to consider this…
Whether Harmer or Pritchard takes leader seat is actually irrelevant - either will be impotent without the other plus a confidence and supply deal with others. It’s a bit rich for those not prepared to offer any alternative to bitch from sidelines tbh.
@BrumManifestos Totally in line with it. The Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill brings more power from Westminster to local strategic authorities. And the Bill also mandates cascade of further authority to local neighbourhoods. Read the detail!
Paul is dead right that Birmingham needs a new governance model much more radical than a network of Town Councils. A full scale break up is certainly an option but there are downsides to this and other options available. Which is why new City leadership should open up the debate.
@JaneRockHouse@RobPocock1 Our separately funded town council is a lame duck, we pay £2.5m into it and get hardly anything back out of it. Any area can create a parish council like Sutton did. But Birmingham needs breaking up into smaller authorities. Remember Sutton and Edgbaston subsidise most of Bham
@alexjhurley If localism is too weak then strengthen and extend it. Over-centralised governance is costly and remote from the public. But more localisation does not have to mean more separate Councils! That’s why a dispassionate review is needed,

A pleasure and an honour to welcome @ZelenskyyUa back to London today - and to recognise the strength and determination of his leadership.
We stand with him and we stand with Ukraine.🇺🇦 🇬🇧
BREAKING: “A really sad feature of a conflict like this is that some people will try to use it to divide communities and tear people apart and we mustn’t let that happen” says Prime Minister Keir Starmer
