We need to take balloting and counting more deliberately and rigorously. The steps below are achievable in 2026 with inexpensive, current technology and administrative procedures. Let's fix this once and for all:
1. We need voter ID to make sure the people doing the voting are citizens - that's the FIRST step.
2. Ballots must be printed to produce a physical record that can reliably preserved and retained and be used for audits.
3. Bipartisan monitoring of polling places.
4. Greater limits on absentee voting - it should be important enough to stay home to vote. Specifically, eliminate "convenience" absentee voting: only home-bound, military overseas duty. Businesses should plan travel around elections, or pay for employees away on business to travel home to vote. Absentee voting should be monitored statistically and variances investigated.
5. Use open source software and hardware as primary means to count ballots - the first way to prevent/detect tampering. As a mandatory check, this count should be validated by a scientifically valid statistical sample of ballots audited on-site at polling places the night of the election. Discrepancies should be investigated and resolved on site following approved procedures.
6. Election balloting, counting, auditing, reporting, and evidence retention should be completed by midnight on election day.
