Nintendo introduced the "Official Nintendo Seal of Quality" in the mid-1980s to rebuild trust after the 1983 Video Game Crash.

The crash was caused by a flood of low-quality, poorly made third-party games, such as E.T. for Atari, destroying consumer confidence in video games.

The Nintendo quality seal reassured customers that games were officially licensed through Nintendo, assuring 'quality' games.

This also controlled the market of games, limiting how many third party companies could create or release games for the system - which led some to say it was anticompetitive.
