Pitch darkness reigned beyond the floodlights, and the ocean breeze was cutting. A guard stepped out of his sheltered post and shined a flashlight. He barked, “What’s your business, miss?”
—Alexandra squinted and shielded her eyes. “I’m hoping for a word with Aircraftsman T.E. Shaw.”
—“And who might you be?”
—“Alexandra Bathenbrook. Tell him it’s the girl he dined with in 1922 who threw up on Winston Churchill and set General Allenby on fire.”
—The guard issued a puzzled grin before reentering the kiosk to place the call. He came back to inform, “He’s on his way. It will take a bit.”
—She paced to loosen her back. Upon last speaking with her father, he mentioned RAF marine T.E. Shaw—who she remained hesitant to believe was John Hume Ross and the man others tried to sell her as being Lawrence of Arabia—had recently returned from India and was now stationed here. Hugging herself for warmth, she inhaled an icy fill of the salted breeze, telling Simra. “Signal me if the guy we meet is Colonel T.E. Lawrence.”
—“Shall I touch my nose?”
—“Perfect, but do not pick it! I’ll pick mine to confirm I saw you.”

With boots tied around her neck, she affixed her heavy backpack and pushed out the bay door. Mist rose from the water, and a strong and blinding sun beat upon the silver aircraft, which floated twenty yards from the riverbank.
—“Mind your members,” Alexandra teased the men. Stepping out onto a pontoon she jumped into the shallows. The water came up to her navel. She trudged forward, a hand pressing the fabric of her khaki linen pants over her private parts. Local legend spoke of a minuscule, needle-thin fish called the candiru, which could swim up one’s urethra, where it would fester and grow until the host’s death. First on dry land, she unslung her rifle and scouted the bank while the others waded over. Rondon granted her permission to borrow the Mauser on the strict condition that she refrain from shooting an Indian, even if her life were imperiled. His construction crews operated under that commandment, and those captured by cannibalistic tribes living deeper in the rainforest likely proved delicious.
