I bet every time you’ve victim blamed a woman and said, ‘why didn’t she just leave?’
You hadn’t considered ‘incase he ties up her and her family and kills them all with a crossbow’, as one of the options.
We know for most women, the most dangerous moment in abuse is when they try to leave. You are most likely to be seriously attacked or killed as you leave, or just after you leave.
That was certainly true for me. Twice. One time resulted in lifelong injuries. Both resulted in police investigations and arrests. Just from choosing to end the relationship.
So next time you learn that a woman is stuck in abuse and can’t/won’t leave, maybe reserve your judgement and consider how much risk she knows she is at.
Two ex-junior hockey players are heading to prison.
A Quebec judge gave Nicolas Daigle a 32-month jail sentence this afternoon. Massimo Siciliano was sentenced to 30 months.
The former Victoriaville Tigres players pleaded guilty last October to sexually assaulting a teenaged girl in June 2021 at a hotel as their team celebrated winning the QMJHL championship.
The Crown had requested 36 months for Siciliano and between 39 and 42 months for Daigle. (An offender sentenced to two years or more usually serves the sentence in a federal penitentiary.)
The defence sought community sentences and probation.
Crown attorney Michel Bérubé: “To all sports associations, particularly hockey associations, there is a very strong message. We have two individuals who played for the major junior league, a prestigious league, who are heading to the penitentiary today.”

If you feel lonely, go outside. If you feel down, spend time outdoors. If you feel sad, connect with nature. Instead of solely relying on human relationships for comfort when you feel low in any way, try connecting with wilderness. Nature has the power to heal and soothe our souls in ways that human interactions sometimes cannot. Finally, feeling down is normal. Everyone does, me too, some tell, some hide. So, you are not the only one who goes through it, the whole world does. From my winter wonderland, I am dispatching immense joy and hope.
