@AC_NoChill I was on a ship in the Philippines and my chair collapsed. Loud bang. Only two white people in a ship of hundreds. Oh yeah… EVERYBODY noticed! 😎
@teachergoals The reverse is also true. You can love your students but ineffective teaching is kinda worthless. I am so tired of hearing from teachers how much they love their students who aren’t learning anything.
@MrZachG I can’t stand it. My school was all about getting kids to feel positive about school, so they’d be motivated, so they would learn and be successful. I based my classroom on learning and success, so they’d feel positive about school, whether they really were motivated or not.
@alfiekohn I encourage kids to shout out and interrupt me with questions. Occasionally I need to “get basic information out there”. Lecture is one way to do that. But they decided when they had enough info to engage and that’s when it got interesting!
I hate wasting time learning something “good”. Hundreds of ways to be good. I try to focus on great and what will have the biggest impact on students, which is usually the basics anyway. #education
@mraspinall It helps when we don’t ask Q’s that can be bubbled. One of my most successful Q’s was “If a zombie outbreak happened toward the end of the civil war, would you run N or S? Use your knowledge of population, geography, and natural resources…” 8th graders argued positions hard!
Have a student you're struggling with?
Try the 'two-by-ten' strategy:
For two minutes each day, 10 days in a row, have a personal conversation with the #student about anything the student is interested in.
Wonderfully simple and wildly effective.

#heydan Just saw your piece on moderates. Yes, I am more inclined to vote for people that show some independence of thought, if they can articulate why. I recently became a DEM and would vote for both politicians mentioned. My approval rating of both just went up.
"In particular, time spent on coaching teachers is associated with higher student achievement growth, whereas time spent on informal classroom walk-throughs is unproductive, especially in high schools."
Principals' interpretations of instructional rounds can get in the way here.
#HeyDan Some problems are so complex, solutions can’t be explained in a news segment. Others are so complex there might not be a solution. Doesn’t mean I don’t want to know about it. Keep up the good work.
