What is happening to the people living here is a catastrophe unlike anything history has ever witnessed.

In recent times, the number of deaths has risen dramatically, and the rate of deaths caused by heart attacks and strokes has become more than three times higher than its normal level. These cases are no longer an exception; they have become a scene that repeats itself before our eyes every single day.

Yesterday, someone I knew very well, in his forties, died from a sudden heart attack, even though he had never suffered from any chronic or serious illness.

Today, two more people died from strokes, and they also had never suffered from any previous illnesses. We have never witnessed such a humanitarian and health collapse in our lives before.

People here are dying one after another, not because their lives have naturally come to an end, but because oppression, hunger, fear, humiliation, deprivation, disease, and endless worries have shattered their hearts and exhausted their bodies until they collapsed without any prior warning.

We are not living a life that resembles the life of human beings, nor are we living a reality like any other on Earth. What we are enduring is beyond what any human being could bear or even imagine, to the point that hearts are bursting from the intensity of the pain, and minds are shutting down in a single moment without any prior warning, after years of terror and endless suffering had exhausted them.

▪️Haaretz has published the testimony of Dr. Mazen Rantisi, a 71-year-old Palestinian physician from Ramallah in the occupied West Bank known as the "Doctor of the Poor," who has endured severe medical neglect, beatings, and degrading treatment since his arrest on 21 June.

▪️Rantisi, who has spent decades providing low-cost medical care to underserved Palestinians, gave his account to attorney Saja Misherqi Baransi of the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) during her first in-person visit with him after more than a month in detention at Ofer Prison.

▪️According to Rantisi, he was denied his regular medication for the first 10 days of detention and is still being refused one of his prescribed medicines. His repeated requests to see a doctor allegedly went unanswered, with a medic checking only his pulse once through a small opening in his cell door.

▪️He described being escorted outside his cell blindfolded, handcuffed behind his back, and forced to walk bent over with his head lowered, saying guards shove detainees' heads down if they try to straighten up.

▪️He also said prisoners are forced to kneel facing the wall during daily roll calls, are routinely cursed and humiliated, and that prison squads frequently storm cells and beat detainees.

▪️During one raid, he said guards fired tear gas into the overcrowded cell, while younger prisoners shielded him from the blows.

▪️Rantisi told his lawyer that his six-bed cell houses 10 detainees, with four sleeping in shifts on mattresses on the floor. He described scorching heat, mold, fleas, gnats, no cleaning supplies, a single shared bar of soap, and food that was unfit for human consumption, including moldy bread, spoiled rice, rotten tomatoes, and stale eggs, which caused him to lose significant weight.

▪️Haaretz noted that his testimony closely mirrors findings in a 1 July report by Israel's Public Defender's Office, which documented worsening detention conditions, severe overcrowding, poor sanitation, inadequate medical care, hunger, and routine violence in Israeli prisons.

▪️The Israel Prison Service of course rejected the allegations, calling them "untrue" and part of what it described as a "worldwide smear campaign" against Israel.

Today, a historic mass funeral in Gaza City laid to rest 112 Palestinian civilians from the Abu Sharia and Al-Hasayna families, making it the largest single-event funeral procession in Palestinian history. These victims were killed on November 22, 2023, during a devastating Israeli airstrike that completely leveled a densely populated residential block in al-Sabra neighborhood, claiming the lives of approximately 308 people in total. Because israeli intense military attacks and severe equipment shortages blocked emergency access to the site, the bodies remained trapped under the concrete rubble for over two and a half years. The collective burial finally took place at the Baptist Cemetery following an arduous, days-long recovery operation by the Gaza Civil Defense, drawing thousands of mourners to honor the victims, who included over 40 children and 30 women.

Now ask yourself this: if this had happened anywhere else in the world, would there have been live coverage from the scene? Would journalists from CNN, BBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, CBC, Sky News, France 24, or other major international outlets have been broadcasting this funeral to a global audience?

Surely, many a single victim elsewhere could command hours of international coverage. But sorry, the victims are Palestinians and the mainstream media does not even consider them human.
