@moseskagan@nnanna@jefffeldman Princeton is a very nice area (from NY currently live in NJ), but why would you retire in the Northeast when you already live in beautiful SoCal?
The foundation under Venice is fascinating.
There is the equivalent of 10 million tree trunks under the Italian city.
At first glance, wood is an inferior option to stronger materials.
But it has proven resilient since 5th century AD, when the wood was first gathered from from Northern Italy and the Balkans (leading to mass deforestation in some areas).
How? Wooden piles are submerged and buried deep in the seabed’s clay, which does two things:
1️⃣ No oxygen: Bacteria rots wood but it needs oxygen to survive and there is none where the wooden trunks are buried.
2️⃣ Salt water: Exposure to salt water for hundreds of years has hardened the wood into a stone-like material.
On top of the wooden piles are a platform made of wooden planks. On top of that is a water-resistant layer of marbles that structures are built on.
And that’s how Venice — which is 118 small islands linked by bridges, walkways and canals — was built in a swampy lagoon.
I rarely watch telly … Idris Elba’s (which happens to be one of my favourite actors) Apple TV series looks really good … Started watching it and I’d highly recommend it to unwind a little during the mortgage crisis! 😂
@OmarMora1es Was just in Saint Germain & we ate at this restaurant called Il Vicolo that was pretty good. Would definitely go back and the owner was very nice/accommodating
In November 1967, ex-Marine John "Chickie" Donohue realized that some of his friends serving in Vietnam needed a morale boost. He decided to travel 8,000 miles to the war-torn country, sneaking in to bring them some ice-cold beers.
U.S. Marine Kevin McLoone was driving a jeep through An Khe during the height of the Vietnam War in late 1967 when he was astonished to see someone familiar. It was none other than John Donohue, a friend from his old neighborhood in New York, standing by the side of the road, attempting to flag down a ride. What made it even stranger was that Donohue was wearing civilian clothes and carrying a duffel bag full of beer. Donohue then informed McLoone that he had made an 8,000-mile journey from New York to Vietnam specifically to locate his friends and uplift their spirits with some cold brews. McLoone, taken aback by the situation, responded, "That's a hell of a beer run."
